What it's like
Bosc holds its shape when you poach it, which is why every cook wants one, and it's just as good raw once it gives at the neck. On Quince A rootstock it tops out around four metres, so you can pick most of it standing on the ground. Pears are slower to bear than apples — expect fruit in year four.
Getting it established
Pick firm in March and ripen indoors. A tree-ripened pear is already past its best.
Potted stock travels upright in a purpose-built carton with the rootball wrapped. Bare-root trees are lifted the week they ship, roots packed in damp shavings. Either way, get it in the ground within a week of arrival.
You've got twelve months. If it was planted the way we suggested and it hasn't come away, send us a photo and we'll replace it on the next run.
Ten or more of one line gets trade pricing without an account. Tell us the site and we'll check the spacing with you before you order.
