What it's like

Sasanqua camellias flower in autumn rather than spring, and they take far more sun than people expect. Setsugekka has large, loosely-formed white flowers with a gold centre, and it's flexible enough to grow as a shrub, a hedge, or trained flat against a wall or fence. Glossy dark foliage year-round.

Getting it established

Acid soil and mulch. Espalier candidates should be tied in from the first year.

Potted stock travels upright in a purpose-built carton with the rootball wrapped. Bare-root trees are lifted the week they ship, roots packed in damp shavings. Either way, get it in the ground within a week of arrival.
