What it's like
Birch does something no other tree does — it lets light through. You can grow a whole garden underneath one. The white bark takes about four years to develop properly, so buy more than one and stagger them so the trunks overlap when you look through. They like cool feet and plenty of water.
Getting it established
Never plant into dry, reflected heat. A group of three at 1.5–2 m spacing looks best.
Potted stock travels upright in a purpose-built carton with the rootball wrapped. Bare-root trees are lifted the week they ship, roots packed in damp shavings. Either way, get it in the ground within a week of arrival.
You've got twelve months. If it was planted the way we suggested and it hasn't come away, send us a photo and we'll replace it on the next run.
Ten or more of one line gets trade pricing without an account. Tell us the site and we'll check the spacing with you before you order.
