Tulip Tree

Liriodendron tulipifera

Enormous, upright and oddly formal. The leaves look like someone cut the tips off with scissors, and the flowers really are tulips.

What it's like

A stately tree for a big space. It grows straight up with a strong central leader, so it never looks scruffy. Flowers appear once the tree is about eight years old — greenish-yellow with an orange band, high in the canopy where you'll only spot them if you're looking. Butter-yellow in autumn.

Getting it established

Deep soil and steady moisture. Not one for a dry, shallow site.

Potted stock travels upright in a purpose-built carton with the rootball wrapped. Bare-root trees are lifted the week they ship, roots packed in damp shavings. Either way, get it in the ground within a week of arrival.

You've got twelve months. If it was planted the way we suggested and it hasn't come away, send us a photo and we'll replace it on the next run.

Ten or more of one line gets trade pricing without an account. Tell us the site and we'll check the spacing with you before you order.
